Bone Idol

Guy

I am the Bassist and webmaster of this site. To get the full story of how this band came to be please see the Scutter website. Here is an old picture of me from my Sad but True days.

Ok personal details first. I was born in Bromley, Kent but lived in North London till my parents split. We then moved to Southwark in South East London and I went to school in Bermondsey (The rhythm section obviously has roots in Bermondsey see Richard's page). I was in and out of various bands that never amounted to anything but maintained an avid interest in live music. I moved to Swindon around 1979 with my work. I am still here with a marvellous wife (Carol) and something called a daughter. She is a teenager who lives in a cave (Carol says it is her bedroom - but I have my doubts). Anyway she is turning out to be quite a talented Drummer - so if you arrive at one of our gigs to see a bunch of Pepsi swilling, pizza eating weirdo's being supported by a bunch of weird looking youngsters it could be her band.

My tastes in music are very catholic my favourites being the holy trinity of Zeppelin, Purple and Sabbath (not necessarily in that order). Although I enjoy my rock music from the late 60's and 70's including Punk and Glam... More up to date I love 'The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' (name me a bass player who doesn’t) and would say the best new band of the last 20 years or so has to be the 'Wildhearts'. Hang head in shame time now! My greatest love when out for a night is watching that micro-star and now multi hit maker John Otway. In my spare time I am to be found in all the regular live music haunts in Swindon, Oxford, Bristol and surrounding areas watching everything from 'Stiff Little Fingers' to 'Magnum' (Carol's fav band).

How I started playing again can be interesting in a sort of train spotting sorta way so being a bit of a sadist here goes. I met Gary years back when he was playing with 'Punishment Due'. It was watching this band and getting to know the bass player from Voltage (another local-ish band originally called 'High-Voltage Bollox') that inspired me to again pick up a guitar (this time a bass - less strings!!! but did not realise heavier with more expensive extra's like amps etc). Following the demise of 'Punishment Due' Gary and myself got together and decided to form a band as a vehicle for his songs, this band became Sad but True. Anyway we gigged regularly fro a couple of years building up a reasonable following but split due to ? why did it split, oh well it did... I also spent time being a gun for hire, filling in on bass for bands such as 'Water Melon Crawl' and 'Roadhouse'. Anyway I went off with the majority of the band except Gary and formed a band called 'Kirkstone' which never got out gigging! At this time I also was in a Neil Young tribute band with Noizey called 'Powderfinger' which did get out gigging. When they fell apart I joined Gary again as a founding member of a band called 'Proudfoot' but had to leave very quickly because of personal problems, but they replaced me and if I remember rightly the drummer as well and went on to play locally of quite a while. In the meantime Gary and me hatched his plan for world domination. And we decided to start a project called 'Scutter' (see above reference). We enlisted Richard on Drums from - hold on- no we stole Richard from 'Roadhouse' and then managed to lay our hands on Noizey (from the same band) and off we went. 'Scutter' was always meant to be a band playing original material which never really seemed to work that well so after one gig back in October 2002 we changed the name of the band to 'Bone Idol' and became a classic rock covers band (this will be covered in more detail on the band biog page). And here I am.

My current gear set up is a G&L SL2000 Bass (Very Heavy in Weight and Picks Ups from Hell). My back up Bass is a Fender Lyte PJ which I use when I am tired or have a back ache from using the G&L or am so drunk I pick up the wrong one. My Amp Rig is a Peavey 700W Head with a 2x10" and 1x15" (Black Widow) Cabs. And to top it all off a Boss effects board. I also have my own Mic to allow me join in the shouty bits on the songs we do and also so that I can be heard when I am extracting the michael from my fellow band members.
